CHICAGO – Headed into Wednesday morning, the Democratic primary race for governor was still too close to call.
Governor Pat Quinn had a lead of fewer than one-percentage-point over rival Dan Hynes with 98 percent of the precincts tallied.
Hynes says he will continue to fight at least through today and has called for every vote to be counted.
But Quinn is declaring victory and is calling for the Democratic party to unite behind him.
The polls closed Tuesday night at 7 p.m., but hours later several races had yet to be decided.
This year’s primary was marked by low voter turnout.
The cold weather and the early election date, the second time Illinois has held a February primary, may have contributed to the lack of voters.
