House Republican Leader Urges Spending Cuts

SPRINGFIELD —House Republican Leader Tom Cross says Illinois does not need a tax increase to solve the state’s nearly 13 billion dollar deficit.

Cross says the budget deficit should be reduced by cutting spending in state government and programs. He says adding new and increased taxes is unnecessary.

Chicago Democrat James Meeks says Illinois needs a tax increase to help reduce the deficit; however it has to come from the house because the senate passed their own tax proposal last fiscal year.
