Gov Takes Tax Talk To School

March 11, 2010

SPRINGFIELD  –  A day after telling lawmakers they had to choose between a tax increase and a billion dollars in cuts to education, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn took his message to school.

Quinn was at a Springfield middle school, saying he doesn’t want to cut from public schools and universities, but he’ll do it.

Quinn says because there will be no more federal stimulus cash, lawmakers are going to have to replace it with a 33-percent tax increase.  He calls it a 1-percent surcharge for kids.

But many lawmakers and all four legislative leaders have already said they won’t vote for the governor’s tax.  Quinn will only say that he has faith.
