Gov Predicts Budget By May’s End

May 17, 2010

SPRINGFIELD  –  Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is not betting on another overtime session in Springfield.

The governor says he expects lawmakers to have a budget before the May 31st deadline.  Legislative leaders are calling the General Assembly back to Springfield next week.

But lawmakers say there is still a lot of disagreement and election year politics to be played before a budget can be worked out.

The sticking point is still the Democratic plan to borrow or issue IOU's to the state's pension system.  But it'll take the same number of votes to pass that plan in May as it would in June or July.

Lawmakers left the Capitol last week, and are planning just a few more days of work before the traditional end of May deadline.
