Quinn pondering death penalty abolition, considering current death row inmates

February 4, 2011

SPRINGFIELD — Governor Pat Quinn says he will consider the fate of current death row inmates when he decides whether abolish the death penalty.

Lawmakers last month approved a measure that ends the death penalty, but it doesn't apply to the 15 current inmates on death row. Quinn was asked Friday if he would commute those sentences.

The governor also says he's been giving the matter a lot of thought and prayer, as he's listened to others on the issue.

Lawmakers sent the legislation to Quinn on January 18th. The state constitution gives the governor 60 days to take action on a bill, or it becomes law. The governor says he'll reach a decision in a few weeks.
